How to run your HP Spectre x360 cool and quiet

Intel i7-10750H, i7-9750H are very potent CPUs but laptops with them tend to run on the hot side. Did Intel meant H for Hot? Of course you may need some time to cool off from gaming or rendering or whatever demanding tasks are. For casual web-browsing, watching Youtube videos, simple office works, you probably don't need all the computation power, nor all that noise and heat. In case of those H-series laptops switching Power mode to "Better battery life" unfortunately is not enough. The solution I found for myself is to addition to going with the "Better battery life" even on AC, is to reduce maximum processor frequency, let Windows park more cores, and stick to the Passive cooling policy. Reducing max frequency, also may reduce coil whine as a nice bonus :-)

Convertibles like Lenovo Yoga 940, HP Spectre x360 have Processor power management disabled by default. The reason is unknown to me, but necessary adjustments still work, and that's all that matter.

Here comes the usual disclaimer, that whatever you do with your computer is on your own risk, and I am not responsible for anything you get using instructions below. Please make sure you do have backup of your MS Windows registry, you will need it to revert your changes.

1. Make sure you are not running high performance mode in HP settings: In "HP Command Center" select "HP Recommended"

2. Make sure the Power mode is set to "Better battery life": On Windows taskbar click battery icon, select "Best battery life"

3. To enable Power profile adjustments for CPU just download and launch registry file - http://loc2log.ucoz.com/power_management.reg. It will enable parameters discussed below, but it will not set any values - that is totally up to you, how much performance to cut for sake of quietness and temps.

4. After the registry file execution, on in taskbar, right click on battery icon, select "Power options", "Create a power plan".

5. Put whatever you like in plan name, e.g. "Cool", click "Create".

6. On the newly created plan, click "Change plan settings", then "Change advanced plan settings".

7. Locate, "Processor power management" and tweak enabled parameters to your liking.

The following configuration pretty much eliminated heat and noise in my case on both HP Spectre x360 with i7-10750H and Lenovo Yoga c940 15.6" UHD (all for both, "On battery" and "Plugged in"). The Yoga was not as quiet as the Spectre though.

  • Processor power management
    • Processor performance core parking min cores: 50%
    • Maximum processor frequency: 1600
    • System cooling policy: Passive

8. Click "Apply", give the computer some time to cool-off, then try some of your "non-demanding" tasks. Adjust parameters as necessary

9. Click "Ok" to keep the parameters.

Now you should be able to run cool and quiet with just switching to the newly created power profile: On the taskbar right click on battery and select your "Cool" profile. Enjoy the silence ;-)

Hi man,
Thank you so much for your good work!
Your fix worked perfectly fine and thanks to you I'm now able to enjoy browsing with my Spectre without becoming totally deaf biggrin

I wish you the best,
John

PS: For those of you who may wonder if is regedit file is safe, I can assure you that it's 100% legit and it only does what it's suppose to do. Absolutly no problem there!

Hi There,
You are pure genious :-) Finally something at least partially works for me now. I have tried many proposed solutions elsewhere but nothing helped yet to add the missing Processor power management etc to my new windows 10 & laptop HP ENVY x360 15-ed0003nc i7-1065G7. I have been testing 5 new shiny notebooks last 3-4 weeks and the possibility to have it running completely silently is important to me (only dell xps 15 was completely silent during my normal work via vmware..). You can see my and other people desperate crying in the links below.

Following your instructions I am able now to have my Cool profile! But.. still even with the max frequency e.g. 1200, passive cooling and the same set up as for On battery, the fan is still spinning at least with the minimal noise now all the time. Any idea why? When On battery, the laptop can be without any noise when on idle or minimal CPU usage (browsing, video calls..). I am using Open Hardware Monitor to verify that the temp is now really under 50-55C and the frequency below 1200 MHz. There must be still something else making a difference between On battery and Plugged in modes. Anyway it is an improvement now and I believe the final full silence is achievable soon! HP help is unfortunately useless, that is increadible. I have been almost ready to return even that last notebook which I like otherwise a lot.

Glad you found the regex edits for power profiles useful. Thanks for the encouragement :-)
As for:
"passive cooling and the same set up as for On battery, the fan is still spinning at least with the minimal noise now all the time. Any idea why?"

I think in fact there is different power management for inlet and battery power regardless of profile selected. I think of it as 2 different dimensions :-) You can still try to play with BIOS settings there maybe power profile / power mode selection there. But I did not find it making much difference on Lenovo and HP running H-series CPUs. I can only imagine G-series is somewhat in the middle between the H and U-series.

Cheers!

I have tried all possible combinations without success.. Still you have done something, what HP is not keen to do from some reason or they just do not care?? Now at least my laptop knows how to be completely silent from time to time although still it is mostly on the lowest fan speed most of the time.
Another annoying thing acknowledged by users is that alt+shift does not change keyboard language on some HP laptops including my shiny new one. In windows set up it looks OK (alt+shift is there and selected) but it does nothing. I am able to switch between CZ/EN only using windows key+space. Also other tried shorcuts like ctrl+0/1/2/3 do not work to select quickly what needed. Weird is that HP user support.. If you need some work, here it is ;-)
Take care.
Richard

Interesting find on that Alt + Shift. On my x360 it works fine if I use left Alt + Shift, but does not for the right pair. I think it is because the right Shift is combined with "prt scr". Changing Fn mode in BIOS might help.
I also miss proper Ins when in Linux. I guess it is the nature of the beast :-) but still something HP should have thought of.
